Surrounded by a quiet residential neighborhood, “Machinoma Omori” operates as a vital commercial hub supporting the daily lives of the local community. For the renewal of the rooftop terrace located on the west side of the third floor, our objective was to enhance its utilization, creating a highly engaging space that serves simultaneously as an active playground for children and a relaxing lounge space for visiting shoppers.

Given the low-rise residential area surrounding the facility, the third-floor terrace offers an unexpectedly expansive and unobstructed view of the sky. Capitalizing on this unique site condition, we developed the design concept: “Soranoma: A Space Connecting with the Sky.”

The spatial programming features a stepped deck terrace that allows visitors to ascend and overlook the cityscape, alongside cloud-shaped benches designed for lying back and looking up at the sky. For communal gathering areas, we incorporated custom seating cushions that visually evoke the color gradients of a sunset.

By engaging with dynamic natural phenomena—such as shifting cloud formations and the ever-changing hues of the sky—through both play and relaxation, we envision this space as an experiential environment that sparks curiosity and new discoveries for children.
