Second Living Room Surrounded by Hijiyama
Duo Hills Hijiyama Residence
Nestled at the base of Hijiyama, a historic landmark known for its continuous human activity since the Jomon period (c. 14,000 and 1,000 BC), its popular cherry blossom spots in the spring, its role as an elevated lookout offering panoramic views of the city, and for having shielded a part of the town from the atomic bomb, Dio Hills Hijiyama Residence offers a unique living experience. Despite its modest elevation of 70 meters, Hijiyama is widely recognized as a landmark in Hiroshima City.
In response to the significant lifestyle changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, we aimed to provide a living space that supported enriched home life. We conceptualized the communal areas as a “Second Living Room,” featuring a private terrace exclusively for residents, seamlessly integrated with a lounge located at the foot of Hijiyama. At Hijiyama Terrace, residents could enjoy the abundant nature of Hijiyama, hosting parties with friends, enjoying special cherry blossom viewings with family, gathering with fellow residents for wine tasting sessions, or simply spending personal time reading.
The terraced space was designed as a three-dimensional private garden, utilizing the enclosed environment with hexagonal module structures. This modular design was applied from tiles to furniture and the overall spatial configuration, achieving a terrace space that harmonized with the natural surroundings of Hijiyama.
